Accra, Ghana — The safety of journalists around the world was a prevalent theme at the 2018 World Press Freedom Day in Accra, Ghana. Posted around the conference hotel were posters featuring the faces of journalists killed in action, drawn in pencil, paint and pen. Just days before the conference, 10 journalists were killed by a bomb in Kabul, Afghanistan, and were the victims of an attack targeted directly towards journalists.

But the story is much bigger.

On this podcast from the WPFD youth newsroom, Alec Cowan speaks with Ilias Alami, the operations coordinator for the Afghan Journalists Safety Committee. The episode focuses on what Alami’s organization does for the safety of journalists in Afghanistan and how youth propelled the Afghan media to the diversity and enthusiasm it has today.
