María Blanco: Fighting for undocumented students

The core of Donald Trump’s campaign platform was to build a wall on the Mexican-American border to stop immigrants crossing without documentation. On January 26, Trump issued two executive orders: one mandating the construction of the wall and another ordering the recruitment of 10,000 additional homeland security officers to enforce deportations.

María Blanco is a lawyer, a social justice advocate and a Latina woman. She says that Donald Trump’s election has created panic for undocumented immigrants and their friends and family who have legal status.

Blanco is the executive director of the undocumented legal services center at the University of California, Davis. She recently visited the University of Oregon as the keynote speaker for a roundtable discussion addressing questions about immigration law and immigrants’ rights.

This interview was recorded on January 30, 2017.
